Reasons for Dry Mouth At Night
We've all heard of dry mouth, but do you know what causes it? Our salivary glands produce saliva or spit, which serves to moisten the mouth. This orifice is intended to remain soggy. If the salivary glands suspend proper functioning, then the mouth dehydrates. This leads to a clammy feeling inside our mouths. We refer to this sensation as dry mouth. Left unresolved, this dehydrated state breeds fetid breath. Eventually, the mouth can suffer infection setting in as well. To avoid the entire situation and subsequent risk to your health, educate yourself on the origins of dry mouth. If you know what leads to the condition, you can take steps to prevent it. Below are some common inducements of dry mouth. Familiarize yourself with them so you know what to avoid.
1.) Medicines: All medications produce side effects. A common byproduct of many prescription and non-prescription medications. These include drugs to treat depression, also known as antidepressants, as well as cold remedies, antidotes for allergy symptoms, such as antihistamines or nasal decongestants, anti-anxiety drugs (anxiolytic), and medications for hypertension, such as diuretics. Asthma medications such as bronchodilators are known to induce dry mouth in patients. The effect isn't limited to legal medications. Black market substances like marijuana also manifest dry mouth.
2.) Cancer treatments. The radiation one undergoes for radiotherapy to treat cancer destroys the salivary glands in the head and neck. The drugs used in chemotherapy impact saliva's viscosity, which results in patient complaints of dry mouth.
3.) Illnesses: Many conditions alter the mouth's ability to generate saliva. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, Sjögren's Syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease are all conditions that inflict dry mouth as a secondary result. In addition, diabetes that is not properly controlled and a good case of the mumps will leave a patient with dry mouth.
4.) Habits: It's not news to any of us that smoking is lethal. But a little known fact regarding both chewing tobacco and smoking is that both dry the conditions within the mouth. Smoking and tobacco use disturb the manufacture of saliva. You may already know that alcoholic beverages dehydrate the body. But you may not know that drinking alcohol also perturbs the accumulation of saliva. Are you a mouth breather? Then you may also have dry mouth.
5.) Surgery: Occasionally due to a tumor or blockage, extraction of the parotid gland is necessary. An infection of the parotid would also lead to its removal. The parotid gland is the biggest gland producing saliva in the body. Without this gland, maintaining adequate saliva levels becomes taxing. Dry mouth is a likely outcome.
6.) Trauma: An injury to head or neck region can easily impinge the nerves which communicate messages to the salivary glands. These nerves manage and oversee the production of saliva in the glands. Without the go ahead from the nerves, the salivary glands would cease production.
7.) Dehydration: Burns, fever, diarrhea, regurgitation, and inordinate perspiration will lead to fluid loss. If the fluid forfeiture becomes great enough, dehydration can occur.
